Tell Your Gift Recipetent To
Be Careful & Not Heat Over
Three Minutes, Unless They
Want PopCorn!

The Best Home Made Gift You Can Give!

'I Guarantee It Will Be Used'

Rice Bag Pattern

Note: This is a wonderful Gift.  I have three. One like this, and 2 out of mens socks (see pattern), and I use them Day & Night!

Supplies:
# 1 piece of 15" long 12" wide piece of close woven fabric
   (for rice bag).
# This next piece of fabric is an option (if you chose
to make a slip cover for your rice bag)
'make it - it keeps your rice bag clean'

1 piece of 15 1/2 long 12 1/2 wide patterned cotton
(for pillow slip). If you chose to use one.
Not necessary, but can be removed & washed.
# matching thread
# scissors
# sewing machine (or needle & thread).
# rice

How to Sew the Rice Bag

Instructions:

The first step to making a pillow is to select your fabric.
You will also need to have sufficient rice to fill your pillow 2/3 full.
Decide if you want the rice bag to have a removable cover.

Now you are ready for the fun part.
Fold the 15 X 12 inch square in half with the wrong sides together and Sew the long sides together using a half inch
seam allowance.
(A seam allowance is the measurement from the edge
of the fabric to where you want the sewing machine to
stitch the fabric.)

On the top end, sew about 3 inches (back stich to make sure
    it holds)
This leaves you with an open space of about 3 inches.
Use that space to turn your bag right side out.

Now, you are ready to finish your bag.
Pour the rice into the 3 inch opening, filling it about 2/3 full.
Then hand stitch the opening closed.

Now, you can repeat the process, except before sewing the
long side, turn the short side under 1/4 inch and seam it
   (like a regular pillow case).
Then simple sew the long side & turn.

Instuctions for the gift recipent:
Microwave for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes and place aroung your
neck, or any spot that aches or needs warmth.

Tips & Warnings
*Bags can be put in the microwave for 2 minutes and then
used as a heating pad. Generally, the heat will last for
twenty minutes to a half hour. Because the bag is made
with rice, it cannot be washed, but if it gets old the bags
are easy enough to make and replace.
Bags can also be placed in the freezer to use as an ice pack.
*Be careful not to burn yourself with the bag, as it can be
quite warm after it is heated.

Sock Version of Rice Bag
Often Used to Relieve Arthritis Pain

Arthritis is a debilitating condition that adversely affects millions of individuals. The disease causes pain
and swelling of the affected joints, and although many find relief via drug therapy, physicians
often recommend the use of moist heat followed by cold compresses to alleviate pain and swelling.
Rice bags are a perfect solution to provide this therapy and are simple to make with a few materials and
a rudimentary knowledge of sewing techniques.

Things You'll Need:
    * 2 men's large tube socks
    * 5 to 6 lbs dry, uncooked rice
    * Needle and thread
    * Sewing machine
    * Scissors

Assembling and Using Your Rice Bags

Step 1
Make two rice bags at a time so you may prepare one for moist heat and one for a cold compress.
The tube sock rice bag is the easiest to assemble and requires the least amount of sewing technique.
Simply fill each tube sock with rice to the fill line (see diagram above), and sew the top shut using
a running stitch by hand or using a sewing machine.
If you are sewing by hand, you may want to sew across the opening two or three times to insure
    rice will not leak out.

Step 2
USING YOUR RICE BAGS:
To make a cool compress, place your rice bag in a plastic bag and store in the freezer. The tube sock
rice bag takes a minimum of 1 ½ hours in the freezer and the large rice bag takes a minimum of 2 hours
    in the freezer.
To use, remove from the plastic bag and place on or wrap the affected area.

For moist heat, place a tube sock bag in the microwave on high for 2 minutes, or a large rice bag in the
microwave on high for 3 minutes.
DO NOT PUT WATER OR ANY LIQUID ON THE BAG.
The grains of rice contain natural moisture when heated.
Remove from the microwave and shake the bag a few times to distribute the heat.
Place on or wrap the affected area.

Tips & Warnings

*Bags can be put in the microwave for 2 minutes and then used as a heating pad.
Generally, the heat will last for a half hour or more.
*Because the bag is made with rice, it cannot be washed, but if it gets old the bags are easy
     enough to make and replace.
*Bags can also be placed in the freezer to use as an ice pack.
*Be careful not to burn yourself with the bag, as it can be quite warm after it is heated.

Do You Crochet A Little?

These will keep their little tootsies warm!
Easiest Baby Booties Pattern

You'll only need to know how to chain, single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch to do this pattern.
The color used in the picture is "black blast", but there are dozens of colors available - one ball of Bernat Frenzy (1.75 oz.) will make two booties with just enough left over that you can have an oops or two. Lastly, you'll need a size F crochet hook.

Chain 15 (17 for larger booties)

Row 1: Single crochet in the 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across (13 sc - or 15 sc for larger size)

Rows 2-16: Single crochet in each single crochet across. Do not chain at end of row. Turn and single crochet across.

Form Leg

Do not finish off. Mark your last stitch, and fold the rectangle so that rows 1 and 16 match up. Starting with the last single crochet made, slip stitch in same stitch and in 6 more
stitches (7 for larger size). Mark last stitch.

Using the tail from beginning crochet, draw opposite side (the heel) together and knot tightly.

Return to marked stitch. Chain 3 and double crochet in each single crochet around leg (the "open" area). Join with slip stitch.

Repeat twice.

Close Toe and Heel

Turn bootie inside-out. Join yarn with a slip stitch at bottom of heel and work your way up to the leg joining using slip stitches.

Finish off, fastening tightly.

The toes will be "flat" - joined horizontally instead of vertically as the heel was. Join yarn with a slip stitch at one side of toe and slip stitch in each stitch across.

Finish off and fasten tightly.

The leg of these booties can be left "long" and a bow weaved through near the top, or it can be folded once over.
